Paranormal Marketing Activity

Posted by , 07/10/09

paranormalactivityA low budget, Blair Witch Project style horror movie is attracting massive attention in the US due to its original online marketing strategy.

Made for just $15,000, Paranormal Activity is being promoted by video trailer, social media and a website where viewers can vote for the movie to open in their city, making it, the makers claim “The first ever major film release decided by you”.

The counter on their site was reading just under half a million votes at the time of writing. If it hits 1 million the makers say it  will open nationwide. More »

"Labour doesn’t need The Sun, we’ve got Twitter!"

Posted by , 30/09/09

sun30thseptSo tweeted Labour Twitter Czar, Kerry McCarthy at 23.04 last night as news broke that The Sun’s support for the Labour Party was disappearing over the Brighton horizon – off to join ‘the boy Cameron’ after 12 years.

Is this true? Can Twitter replace The Sun for Labour? Well no. Twitter is just a channel, it’s content voters warm to and no matter how hard Labour might try to send out interesting tweets, they’re not going to prise 2 million Sun readers away from their favourite daily.

It’s true that Twitter has given some people a powerful new voice. One moment of tweeted irritation by Stephen Fry earlier this year, about HP printer software had their PRs on the phone to fix is within minutes of the tweet going out. “Use your power wisely young Skywalker” was Fry’s reaction. Sarah Brown overtakes Stephen Fry on Twitter

Posted by , 25/09/09

sarahbrownFrom a standing start in March ’09 the PM’s wife, Sarah Brown has just overtaken the UK s highest profile Twitterer – Stephen Fry, with 773K followers to Fry’s 768K.

In political terms, Sarah Brown’s rise on Twitter could be significant. As Andy Beckett points out in today’s Guardian article ‘Can Sarah Brown rescue Labour?’ (including the odd comment from me) she now has 15 times the membership of the Labour party following her.

Although the content is deliberately not party political, she is effectively pressing voter flesh online, as she did in person at the Glenrothes by-election to great effect.

paying by iphone for your Starbucks sir?

Posted by , 24/09/09

starbucksIn their latest marketing offensive against dwindling sales, Starbucks has announced an iphone application with a barcode feature enabling iphone owning coffee fans to pay with their handset.

It won’t make much impact in the UK just yet as it’s on trial at just 16 stores in Seattle and Silicon Valley, but boy the headlines, 93 stories on UK Google already. This begs the question, should the money for iphone app development really come out of the PR budget?

Such is media interest in iphone applications and Twitter, More »

It's the content, stupid

obamaonlineEarlier this week OLA’s Internet Activity Index revealed content led sites are still king online with a 24% increase in share since 2003 with communications and commerce sites falling behind. -41% & -19% respectively.

And then on Friday, NMA broke the story that the UK’s second biggest advertiser, P&G is introducing a payment by engagement model for publishers whereby they are remunerated by the number of sign-ups to newsletters or video views.

Habitat back after Twitter retweet

Posted by , 16/09/09

habitat Under mounting criticism for using topical hash tags to boost their tweet circulation, on 24th June 09, Habitat stopped posting. Suddenly, yesterday, tweets started-up again.

An apology was followed by an acknowledgement of past mistakes “This time we want to get it right”  and sensibly their tweeter wouldn’t be drawn on information about the mysterious intern who was blamed for the original micro-blogging misdemeanor. More »

London bridges in Twitter spat

Posted by , 14/09/09

tbTower Bridge’s official Twitter, set up to alert tourists to when the world famous bridge will be ‘lifting’, has triggered a surreal competition for attention from a neighbouring bridge.

ImLondonBridge, purporting to represent the interests of Tower’s non-lifting rival, has been poking fun at the repetitive nature of TB’s tweets which plot the daily passage of high masted boats, e.g., More »

Debenhams Twitter sale now on

Posted by , 09/09/09

debenhamsAs I write there’s a strange scene unfolding in Debenhams, Oxford St. Several of the staff are glued to smart phones advising customers, also supposedly glued to smartphones, by way of Twitter.

It’s been a while since I was in Debenhams but from what I can remember, the basement men’s department is a labyrinth so on that basis alone, this is a welcome development.

Whether my phone would work in the basement or if they’d be able to help with my typical request ’do you have this shirt in XL’ without being able to see me or the shirt remains uncertain.  More »
